at Jack’s Firehouse Restaurant

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

Today we travel to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, officially nicknamed the “City of Brotherly Love” in 2014, for a delicious lunch and a tour that guarantees a unique and interesting look into crime and punishment, and the study of medicine and education of physicians.  Upon our arrival, we embark on an amazing tour at the Eastern State Penitentiary, once the most famous, and expensive prison in the world, for a guided walking tour.  The first true “penitentiary,” the prison was designed to encourage penitence or true regret in the hearts of prisoners.  Our tour will highlight Eastern State’s fascinating 142-year history, revolutionary architecture and notorious law-breaking inmates.  Cellblock 12 is known for cackling and echoing voices, Cellblock 6 for shadowy figures darting along the walls, so you may wish to ask our guide if Eastern State Penitentiary is haunted?  Also included as part of our tour are the central rotunda, restored cells, the solitary confinement yards, the baseball diamond, death row and Al Capone’s Cell.  Next, we enjoy a delicious lunch at Jack’s Firehouse Restaurant.  Please provide a meal choice when making your reservations.  Your choices are Southern Style Pulled Pork Sandwich, Roasted Chicken, Pecan Coated Catfish or Vegetarian Pasta.  Set in a 19th century firehouse in the Fairmount neighborhood of Philadelphia, Jack’s Firehouse Restaurant offers a unique setting with an elegant old neighborhood feel.  We conclude our day in the “City of Brotherly Love” with a visit to The Mutter Museum for a guided tour.  The Mutter Museum was founded to educate future doctors about anatomy and human medical anomalies.  Your tour will include over 20,000 unforgettable objects including fluid-preserved anatomical and pathological specimens, skeletal and dried specimens, medical instruments and apparati, anatomical and pathological models, memorabilia of famous scientists and physicians, medical illustrations, photographs, prints, and portraits.  In addition, they offer changing exhibits on a variety of medical and historical topics.  Note:  Please make sure you are an able walker before booking onto this trip.  Wear comfortable walking shoes, (no heels).  This tour is not suitable for people who have trouble with mobility!
