& Lunch at Jessop’s Tavern

Wilmington, Delaware

Welcome to Jessop’s Tavern & Colonial Restaurant located in the heart of the Historic District of New Castle, Delaware where you will enjoy a delicious lunch.  The three-hundred-year-old building that now houses Jessop’s Tavern was originally built in 1674 as a barrel making business in 1724.  Throughout the years 114 Delaware Street has seen many changes including residential housing and restaurants and in November of 1996 the Day Family opened the tavern as it is now and named it after Abraham Jessop, the proprietor of the barrel making business.  Please provide a meal choice when making your reservations.  Your choices are Dutch Pastrami Reuben, Olde Dutch Tilehouse Chicken, Town Hall Turkey, Bunker Hill Beef or Tavern Salad with Chicken and Bread.  After lunch we depart for the Nemours Mansion & Gardens, a 300-acre country estate of Alfred I. DuPont, the late industrialist and philanthropist.  An outstanding example of a French chateau in the style of Louis XVI, the mansion was started in 1909 and completed in 1910.  The 47,000 square foot mansion looms over the surrounding formal gardens and is furnished with fine antiques, famous works of art, beautiful tapestries, and other treasures.  Our visit includes a guided tour through a series of rooms on three floors, followed by a bus tour through the gardens and surrounding grounds.  The grounds surrounding the mansion extend for one third of a mile along the main vista from the house, and are among the finest examples of French-style gardens in the United States.  The tour will conclude with a visit to the chauffeur’s garage where the family’s antique cars are on display
