Welcome to Springtime at Winterthur!  Today discover the beauty and history of an American Treasure, the country estate of the late industrialist and philanthropist Henry Francis du Pont!  Regarded as one of America’s most breathtaking historic homes and mansions, on par with Biltmore Estate, Monticello, and Hearst Castle, Winterthur is set amidst a 1,000-acre preserve of rolling hills, meadows, streams, and woodlands.  Upon our arrival, enjoy a ½-hour guided garden tram tour (weather permitting), meander along a re-created woodland path in the spring garden, and walk through beautifully furnished rooms.  You will marvel at this premier museum of American decorative arts, furnished with fine antiques, famous works of art, beautiful tapestries, and other treasures displayed in the magnificent 175-room house, much as it was when the du Pont family lived here, as well as in permanent and changing exhibition galleries.  A collector and horticulturist du Pont expressed his love of the land by creating a living work of art that embodies a romantic vision of nature’s beauty.  The estates 60-acre naturalistic garden, designed by du Pont, is among America’s best, with magnificent specimen plantings and massed display of color.  Before our tour enjoy a delicious lunch at Buckley’s Tavern, a neighborhood tavern and restaurant located in the heart of historic Centreville, Delaware.  The two-hundred-year-old building that now houses Buckley’s Tavern was originally built in 1817 as a private residence.  Throughout the years the tavern was the site of a blacksmith shop and a tollgate to collect fees from those traveling to and from Wilmington, Delaware.  In the 1930’s, the house became a popular taproom and ice cream store and in 1951 the proprietor gave the tavern its current name.  Relax and relish the fellowship of friends old and new while you enjoy your meal!  Please provide a meal choice when making your reservations.  Your choices are Meatloaf, Seared Chicken Breast or Seared Salmon Fillet.
