Day 2

Day 2: After breakfast we meet our step-on guide, and depart for a tour of Asheville. You will be amazed by the Art Deco architecture and hidden treasures that wait to be discovered in Asheville's downtown and its surrounding countryside. We begin our day of touring at the Thomas Wolfe Memorial State Historic Site. Considered by many to be one of the giants of 20th-century American literature, Thomas Wolfe, (1900-1938), immortalized his childhood home in his epic autobiographical novel, Look Homeward, Angel. Now the Thomas Wolfe Memorial, his mother's boardinghouse in Asheville, has become one of literature's most famous landmarks. Named "Old Kentucky Home" by a previous owner, Wolfe immortalized this rambling Victorian structure when he recast it as "Dixieland" and it served as the backdrop for his writings about his colorful and turbulent childhood, his family and his hometown of "Altamont", Asheville, North Carolina. After lunch on your own in downtown Asheville, we visit the Folk Art Center. Tucked peacefully among the pines on the Blue Ridge Parkway, the Folk Art Center showcases the finest in traditional and contemporary crafts of the Southern Appalachians. In addition to an Eastern National bookstore, the center houses three galleries, a library and the Allanstand Craft Shop, the oldest continuously operating craft shop in the United States representing the work of over 200 members of the Southern Highland Craft Guild. Enjoy live craft demonstrations daily in the Folk Art Center lobby. We conclude our day of touring at the Smith-McDowell House Museum. Explore Asheville's first mansion and oldest surviving structure. Now restored as a history museum, see period rooms spanning 1840 through 1900, and view special exhibitions in the Museum's Gallery Rooms. Before returning to our hotel for a good night's rest, we are treated to a delicious dinner at a local restaurant. (B, D)

Highlights of the Biltmore Estate tour include access to George Vanderbilt's French chateau style mansion, its formal gardens, and the estate's winery where you will be treated to a wine tasting. The mansion will be decorated with more than 35 magnificent holiday trees to view. A delicious buffet luncheon is included at Biltmore's Stable Café. In the afternoon we return to our hotel where you will have time to relax and freshen up before going out for tonight's dinner at the Stone Ridge Tavern. A family friendly restaurant, Stone Ridge Tavern uses the freshest vegetables and local sourced ingredients from local farmers and the Western North Carolina farmer's market to prepare mouthwatering, original recipes and create desserts made from scratch.
