After breakfast it's a short ride to Galena, Illinois. We'll travel through a town nestled in the hills and valleys of a beautiful and historic former lead mining community and major river port. Galena is named for the lead sulfide mineral galena, which formed the basis for the region's early mining economy. Later the city developed as the largest steamboat hub on the Mississippi River north of St. Louis, Missouri. Upon our arrival, we meet our driver/guide and climb aboard a Galena Trolley for a 1-hour tour of Galena's Historic district. The home of Ulysses S. The six-block Main Street boasts striking examples of various architectural styles, ranging from French Colonial to Greek Revival, and 85% of the town is a national historic district. From our cherry-red trolley car enjoy beautiful city views and great photo opportunities. Following our tour we'll visit two wonderful homes: Belvedere Mansion, a 5,000 square feet with 22 rooms and "Gone with the Wind" drapes, built for J. Russell Jones a steamboat captain and ambassador to Belgium; and the "Jewel of Galena," the Dowling House, built of limestone in 1826 as a trading post and residence, the building is regarded as Galena's oldest and most historic building, and it is also believed to be the oldest stone structure in the State of Illinois.
