Day 1
Welcome Aboard! Sit back, relax, and take in the breathtaking beauty of brilliant fall foliage along every turn as we journey to the charming town of Jim Thorpe, Pennsylvania, nestled within the scenic Lehigh River Gorge. Often referred to as the "Little Switzerland of America," Jim Thorpe delights visitors with its picturesque mountain setting, Victorian architecture, and storybook charm. Upon arrival, we take our reserved seats at Penn's Peak, a stunning mountaintop theater offering sweeping 50-mile panoramic views of Eastern Pennsylvania's Appalachian Mountains. Known as a premier entertainment venue in the Lehigh Valley and Pocono Mountains, Penn's Peak features outstanding matinee performances ranging from Broadway-style productions and comedy shows to lively musical tributes and concerts. Enjoy a delicious luncheon followed by an entertaining concert. After the show, we travel a short distance to Lehighton, Pennsylvania, where we check into the Hampton Inn for a relaxing two-night stay. Following time to unwind and freshen up, we head out for a delightful dinner at Macaluso's Restaurant, a beloved destination at the gateway to the Pocono Mountains, known for its creative and flavorful Italian cuisine for over 30 years. We then return to the hotel for a restful night's sleep.
L, DDay 2
After breakfast we meet our conductor and board the nostalgic Jim Thorpe Trolley for a delightful, narrated tour showcasing the area's rich history and natural beauty. Along the way, we will see many of the town's highlights, including the Jim Thorpe Memorial, the scenic Lehigh Gorge State Park, and a ride up Broadway past charming shops, restaurants, museums, and historic buildings. Our tour continues to Mauch Chunk Lake Park before arriving at the Visitor Center. Following the trolley tour, we visit the historic Old Jail Museum for a guided tour. This striking 19th century stone structure, resembling a fortress overlooking the town, offers a fascinating glimpse into the past. With approximately seventy-two rooms, including twenty-seven cells and basement dungeon cells once used for solitary confinement, the jail is most notably remembered as the site of the hanging of the seven Irish coal miners known as the Molly Maguires in the 1800s. After our tour, enjoy lunch on your own at one of the town's local restaurants or pubs. Afterwards, take advantage of free time to explore Jim Thorpe's inviting downtown area, filled with unique boutiques, antique shops, art galleries, and Main Street merchants - all within easy walking distance of the town square. This afternoon, we visit the elegant Asa Packer Mansion for a guided tour, the former home of philanthropist, railroad magnate, and founder of Lehigh University, Asa Packer. Built in 1861 by Philadelphia architect Samuel Sloan, this impressive three-story residence features eighteen rooms and approximately 11,000 square feet of living space, complete with a distinctive, red-ribbed tin roof and central cupola. After a full day of sightseeing, we return to our hotel where you will have time to relax and freshen up before departing for dinner at a local restaurant, featuring delicious regional flavors.
B, DDay 3
After breakfast we embark on a scenic train excursion through the breathtaking Pocono Mountains aboard the Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railway. This narrated round-trip journey follows the majestic Lehigh River, crossing historic bridges, passing through Glen Onoko, and venturing deep into Lehigh Gorge State Park. Along the way, marvel at towering cliffs, dense forests, and abundant wildlife as we travel to Old Penn Haven and back. Following our train ride, we visit a true hidden gem nestled in the foothills of the Pocono Mountains - Country Junction. Known as the "World's Largest General Store," this delightful destination is a shopper's paradise and family entertainment center. Explore its endless aisles filled with unique treasures, enjoy attractions like the petting zoo and arcade, and soak in the fun, nostalgic atmosphere that makes Country Junction so special. We then depart for home with fond memories of the vibrant beauty of fall in the Pocono Mountains and the charm of historic Jim Thorpe - a unique American town rich in history and character.
