We travel to Wilmington, Delaware for a scenic 1-½ hour round-trip “Leaf-Peepers Autumn Train Ride Excursion” to the Mt. Cuba Picnic Grove, where you’ll enjoy a ½-hour layover at a secluded grove along the banks of the Red Clay Creek. Today’s trip on the Wilmington & Western Railroad will take you back to a time when the diesel locomotive travel ruled the rails. Sit back, relax and enjoy the clickety-clack of the rails, while you find yourself surrounded by the colors, splendor and beauty of autumn. You will travel round trip in antique passenger coaches pulled by an early-generation diesel locomotive. From your seat on the vintage train, you’ll see the past as never before. History will come alive, senses will be excited, and a forgotten era will be relived, and you just might have a little fun along the way! Experience the golden age of railroading as you chug across bridges, clickety-clack through lush tall forests, wind through narrow rock cuts, and whistle past homes in the beautiful valley of the Red Clay Creek. Before our train ride, enjoy a delicious lunch at Buckley’s Tavern, a neighborhood tavern and restaurant located in the heart of historic Centreville, Delaware. The two-hundred-year-old building that now houses Buckley’s Tavern was originally built in 1817 as a private residence. Throughout the years the tavern was the site of a blacksmith shop and a tollgate to collect fees from those traveling to and from Wilmington, Delaware. In the 1930’s, the house became a popular taproom and ice cream store and in 1951 the proprietor gave the tavern its current name. Relax and enjoy the fellowship of friends old and new while you enjoy your meal! Please provide a meal choice when making your reservations. Your choices are Curried Chicken Salad Sandwich, French Dip Sandwich (roasted and shaved beef with provolone and creamy horseradish on a sub roll, with au jus), or Quiche Lorraine.
