Experience the charm and beauty of Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley as the Virginia Scenic Railroad “Alleghany Special” ventures westward from historic Staunton through beautiful farmland of the Shenandoah Valley, on a destination bound for the George Washington and Jefferson National Forests. Bounded by the Blue Ridge and Alleghany mountains, the Shenandoah Valley region is rich in historic and natural resources, and its breathtaking beauty reflects its Indian name which means “Daughter of the Stars”. This excursion will take you through the region’s iconic rural landscapes – you will pass by working farms with cattle, horses, and sheep. Views of the Alleghany Mountains will unfold as you venture west; it is a photographer’s dream. The train turns around in the hamlet of Goshen in Rockbridge County. A delicious lunch will be included during your excursion. Please provide a meal and dessert choice when making your reservations. Your meal choices are Smoked Chicken Sandwich, Traditional Greek Salad with Chicken or Carolina-Style Pulled-Pork BBQ Sandwich. Your dessert choices are Classic New York Style Cheesecake, Tiramisu or Triple-Layer Chocolate Cake. Following our train excursion, it is a short ride to Staunton’s downtown, to experience a friendly combination of small-town USA and a vibrant cultural scene. It is the place you go to stroll red brick sidewalks, admire stunning architecture and shop locally owned downtown boutiques. Note: Fast food stops will be made both en route to Staunton, and on the return trip home.
