The Harriet Tubman Visitor Center &
Suicide Bridge Restaurant Crab Feast
and The Harriet Tubman Mural
Church Creek, Maryland
Today we travel across the Chesapeake Bay to Church Creek, Maryland on Marylands Eastern Shore. Operated jointly by Maryland Park Service and the National Park Service, The Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad Visitor Center opened to the public in March 2017. The visitors center will immerse you in Tubmans world through informative, powerful, and thought-provoking multimedia exhibits. Harriet Tubman grew up in slavery in Marylands Choptank Region of Dorchester County, lived, worked, and worshipped in places near the visitor center. It is from this area that she first escaped slavery, and where she returned about thirteen times over a decade, risking her lifetime and again to lead some seventy friends and family members to freedom. To carry out the dangerous missions, she used the Underground Railroad, a secret network of places and people. We will conclude our day on Marylands Eastern Shore with a crab feast at Suicide Bridge Restaurant in Hurlock, Maryland. Enjoy plenty of hot and spicy crabs, cool drinks, and the fellowship of friends old and new while dining in the waterside atmosphere of the Suicide Bridge Restaurant. Your crab feast will consist of steamed crabs, crab soup, fried chicken, clam strips, corn-on-the-cob, coleslaw, dessert, iced tea, soda, coffee, and draft beer. Note: On the return trip home, we will make a photo-stop at The Harriet Tubman Mural in Cambridge, Maryland. The mural, titled Take My Hand, was designed and painted by artist Michael Rosato, and completed on May 20, 2019. It is a significant piece of public art in Cambridges historic downtown area, highlighting the citys rich African American heritage and Tubmans life in Dorchester County. The mural shows Tubman with her hand outstretched, beckoning the viewer to join her on a journey to freedom.
